Tony Magar
New Paintings
April 22 – May 29, 2006

The first time I exhibited Tony Magar’s paintings was in 1978. His work was a revelation to me. I was, at the time, director of the Taos Art Association in Taos, New Mexico. Although I represented a number of artists from the Abstract Expressionist generation at the gallery, Magar was a unique talent. Utilizing the artistic vocabulary of his generation, that of the Abstract Expressionist, his work was always fresh, exciting, invigorating and very much alive and current and continues in this vein today.

I have always anticipated a new Magar show with much excitement. Viewing his new work for the first time has always left me breathless and amazed. Astounded that he continues to astonish me after more than twenty shows. Dazzled at his virtuosity, emotional intensity, elegance and sheer painterly brilliance. Twenty-eight years ago, I would never have imagined an artist’s work would enthrall and deliver me to such emotionally spiritual heights time after time; exhibit after exhibit. Each body of work grows from the previous effort, not eclipsing the preceding body, but rather clarifying and illuminating while also opening new avenues of expressive content.

Magar is not an easy act to follow, not even for Tony Magar. He never fails to bring out the wow! factor in my response, and I see a lot of art every day, year after year. I look forward to this new show by Tony Magar. I sincerely hope you will too.
