Tara Conley
Uprights
September 9 –October 14, 2006

Tara Conley’s exhibit “Uprights” will open at New Gallery/Thom Andriola on Saturday, September 9, 2006 with a reception from 6-8pm.

In this second one-person show at New Gallery, Tara continues to explore the essence of three dimensional color form. The result is an explosive study of primal sculptural objects with life of their own. Tara incorporates various soft and pliable materials, creating a biomorphic fantasy world where objects exist in a state between the micro and the macrocosmic. Works can appear to be either strange otherworldly creatures or minute protozoa enlarged to a heroic size.

As Tara explores new dimensions of sculpture, she nurtures her sense for material that she expressed in her last successful show at New Gallery: “I’ve recently fallen in love with cotton. Forgiving and fluent, it has brought out new sensibilities in my work. Combining metal and cotton has presented limitless possibilities and opened my mind to incorporating various materials into my artwork in the future.” And opened she is, for there is a real sensation in the space occupied by her artwork, which not only is viewed, but experienced as well.

Tara Conley’s show is accompanied by works from renowned photographer Susanne York that documents and reinterprets the imagery found in Tara’s studio. Her images fully convey her feelings about Tara’s work: “I continually find myself fully physically and emotionally energized by Tara's work. Her use of form and texture evokes a visceral engagement within me and I have no choice but to explore each piece from every angle and vantage point.”
