Ron Davis New Gallery/Thom Andriola is proud to present its first exhibition of internationally renowned artist Ron Davis from February 10 to March 10, 2006. Ron Davis is possibly one of the most undervalued major artists of the Modern Era. He is one of the incomparable masters of the last forty years in contemporary art. His unique reverse painted fiberglass dodecagons of the late 60’s and the Snapline paintings of the 70’s and early 80’s are veritable icons of the late 20th century art history and most major modern museums own fine examples of this work. Along with Ellsworth Kelly and Kenneth Noland, Davis was one of the innovators of the “shaped canvas” movement during the mid 60’s. Then again in the late 60’s and 70’s, along with artists such as Frank Stella, Davis pushed the notion of painting with the use of new materials such as PVC and fiberglass Davis had his first solo show in 1965 at Nicholas Wilder Gallery in Los Angeles. Noland, Olitsky, Nauman, Morris Louis, and Agnes Martin were also artists of the Wilder Gallery at the time. Between 1968 and 1974, Ron Davis had five solo shows at the legendary Leo Castelli Gallery in New York, probably the most important gallery in the world at the time. Between 1978 and 1990, Davis was represented by the blue chip Blum Helman Gallery in New York and Los Angeles where he had numerous one-man shows. Davis represented the United States at Documenta 4 in 1968 and at the XXXVI Venice Biennale in 1972. He had retrospective exhibitions at the Oakland Museum in 1976 and at the Butler Institute of American Art in 2002. These are just a few of the many highlights in his long and illustrious career. For his first ever Houston exhibition, Davis has chosen to present an entirely new series in an innovative, unique medium. Shown for the first time anywhere, the paintings on metal combine sculpture, painting and cutting-edge digital technology to create a body of work with a distinctive original presence. The shimmering surface quality in combination with hard-edged abstract illusionist forms has been a hallmark of Ron Davis’ work through the years. After more than forty years of groundbreaking creation, Ron Davis continues to innovate and astound with this surprising and accomplished new body of work. Thom Andriola
