Andreas Nottebohm Surface Explorations Opening Saturday June 3, 2006 Artist's Reception June 2, 6:00-8:00 pm Andreas Nottebohm is not a magician. That would be too simple an explanation to describe the uncanny visual wonders he creates. The works exist in their own unique realm, neither painting nor sculpture, but still somehow seemingly both. The artist deconstructs the picture plane using a spare language of engraved mark making on a pure metal surface. The resulting imagery demarcates multi-dimensional fields of illusory form that, despite their visual complexity, are simple poetic visions of sheer eloquence. Andreas Nottebohm is engaged in the process of changing the way we perceive wall-based art works. His pieces do not merely hang on the wall; rather they transform the visual plane into a three-dimensional atmosphere, sometimes containing multiple horizons. It can even appear as if the viewer is actually inside a Nottebohm work, reaching through the other side. Windows in Space or Mirrors in Time, the work of Andreas Nottebohm has definitely added a new dimension to the world of contemporary art. |
